Gareth Davies lets fly!

Gareth Davies – Dragons, poodles and spin doctors: But of course, as quite a few people know, the expert in question is Tim Ireland, of Bloggerheads fame. Tim is no secret practitioner of the black arts in darkened rooms; he promotes himself relentlessly. Right up until, in 2005, along comes Tim and launches BackingBlair, his one man attempt to bring down the Prime Minister because Tim doesn’t like him. Now, it’s always a little dodgy when a hitherto impartial practitioner, available to the highest bidder, a latterday technological Beau du Jour, suddenly starts to claim to have high political principles. And that’s led me to wonder in recent days whether Tim really does have high political principles, or whether he’s actually engaged in the ultimate act of self promotion. ‘Look at me’ he’s shouting to the cognoscenti, I’m Tim Ireland, the cleverest man in the blogosphere, the relentless promoter of the best MP’s websites and the originator of an oh so witty and post modern campaign against the Prime Minister. It’s clever, it’s relentless, and it’s a story of one clever man using his skills and abilities to manipulate the technology to tell us what he wants us to hear. Ireland boasts of how he used his ability to ensure that Google searches for Tom Watson were more likely to produce answers related to his client than to the infinitely more famous golfer Tom Watson. I understand what people like Tim do, and why people pay them, but I feel like he’s re-arranging the global phone book, tearing out the pages he doesn’t want you to see, and adding in the pages that promote his people. And now he’s using our electoral process to promote Tim Ireland, the brand. I’m not sure I like that idea…

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Gareth, you’re a world-class arse. One can only wonder why you have such ‘concerns’.

(puts on fisking gloves)

To begin with, this post starts with a suggestion that Paul Flynn MP was blogging before Tom because he published excerpts of his book on his website. The key to blogging is networking and communication. Flynn’s site does not allow comments now, and didn’t then. Case closed. Now on with the numbers…

1. Tim is no secret practitioner of the black arts in darkened rooms; he promotes himself relentlessly.
It’s called transparency, Gareth. I’m sure you’d be able to have a much bigger hissy-fit if I was a secret squirrel hiding behind a pseudonym. And I make no excuses for any level of self-promotion. The more I achieve, the more people know about me. This allows me to more I achieve more. I’m on a (temporarily paused by necessity) mission. And I’d like to think that it’s a worthy one.

2. Right up until, in 2005, along comes Tim and launches BackingBlair, his one man attempt to bring down the Prime Minister because Tim doesn’t like him.
Yes. Just because I don’t like him. This is a campaign based in hate, not reason. And one-man attempt? I could have sworn I had 3 other core team members and a few dozen bloggers onside. Perhaps they are merely voices in my head.

3. Now, it’s always a little dodgy when a hitherto impartial practitioner, available to the highest bidder, a latterday technological Beau du Jour, suddenly starts to claim to have high political principles.
*Suddenly* claims to have high political principles? Do your research, Gareth. Highest bidder? I say again: Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Tom came to me. His site was built on a shoe-string budget because I thought the project really needed to happen. Boris, like William Hague, was offered his blog for free (all he pays for is hosting) – again, because I thought the project really needed to happen. But you seem to suggest that I’m some kind of whore.

4. I understand what people like Tim do, and why people pay them, but I feel like he’s re-arranging the global phone book, tearing out the pages he doesn’t want you to see, and adding in the pages that promote his people.
*My* people? The only thing that sets these people apart is a willingness to communicate. They get out there and network and reap the rewards. And they have their own opinions. *And* their opinion reaches more people via Google and other search engines because it is supported by other people in a wider sense and in a specific sense (i.e. via linkage to the blog in general and/or a link to a specific post). Ooh, look! Here’s Tom’s opinion and many differing opinions on the subject of protest voting.

I don’t say this often enough, so I’ll take the opportunity to say it now…

Hello to you, fellow blogger and/or regular reader of Bloggerheads. Except for Gareth, who is an arse. It’s because of your support that I’m able to do what I do. I thank you.

PS – Did you catch that last bit? “It’s because of your support that *I’m* able to do what *I* do. *I* thank you.” See? It’s all about me! Look at me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me! Me!

;o)

Teh Tory Fear – a different viewpoint

Guardian – Blair is set for a third term – and it’s a chilling prospect: A prominent businessman said to me last week: “You can feel this government cracking up. Everything around Blair feels rotten. The end is in sight.” He is not the only inhabitant of the anti-Labour camp to feel a spring surge of hope. Conservative frontbenchers have been making good speeches and sharp points. There has been much speculation about a Tory revival. I don’t believe a word of it. Much of the country is simply not listening. The strength of the economy sustains a widespread sense of wellbeing, matched by an indifference to all sorts of issues people should care about, but do not. There is amazingly little anger of the kind that provokes electorates to topple governments.

David Shayler to stand against Tony Blair

Scotsman – Rebel Spy to Stand Against Blair in Election: Renegade spy David Shayler is to stand against the Prime Minister in the forthcoming general election, it was confirmed today. Mr Shayler, jailed for six months in 2002 for revealing official secrets, will run in Mr Blair’s Sedgefield constituency. The ex-MI5 officer said he would campaign on two anti-war issues and on Mr Blair’s “attacks on democratic rights over the last eight years”. Mr Shayler, a former counter-terrorism specialist, claimed the Prime Minister’s backing for the Iraq war had put Britons at greater risk from terrorism.
Tony Blair is a big, fat liar!
BBC – Shayler to stand against Blair: The former counter-terrorism officer, who is originally from nearby Middlesbrough, said: “Our democracy is in crisis and unless we act now, there will be no democracy left fighting for. If we can encourage a large protest vote in Sedgefield, it would send a clear message to the politicians of this country that the people have had enough of autocratic leaders who fail to represent their constituents.”

This was the bit I wasn’t able to tell you about on the 9th. Work is still being done on the back-end for Craig Murray’s website, but as soon as that’s done, we begin to build a blog for David Shayler.

I’m likely to go quiet for long periods next week, but you can check out the sites under ‘associates’ for bits and bobs I would normally be blogging myself.

Tony Blair’s pants are on fire

BBC – MP thrown out over Blair war jibe: An MP has been thrown out of the House of Commons chamber after claiming that Tony Blair had “misled” Parliament over the Iraq war. The Commons speaker ordered Plaid Cymru’s Adam Price to leave after he refused to withdraw the comments. Mr Price was trying to highlight calls to impeach the prime minister ahead of Friday’s second anniversary of the start of the conflict. The rules bar MPs from accusing fellow parliamentarians of lying.

But they don’t stop me. Googlebombs away!

Tony Blair is a liar. Being a politician and a lawyer makes him quite an accomplished and skilled liar, but a liar he is, and it is as a liar that he will be remembered.

Also…

BBC – Iraq, Tony and the truth: Last Summer the Prime Minister made an impassioned plea to draw a line under Iraq, saying – “No one lied. No one made up the intelligence… Everyone genuinely tried to do their best in good faith for the country in circumstances of acute difficulty. That issue of good faith should now be at an end.” – But allegations that Mr Blair misled the country persist. On the second anniversary of the Iraq war, Panorama reveals how several of the claims he made in public during the build up to the war – and afterwards – conflict with what was going on behind the scenes, as evidenced for instance by government officials and documents.

Note – The new version of the poster to see here is only a draft. I’ll work on a larger one once I have a definitive up-to-the-minute cost of the war in Iraq. This figure is an interim one based on this item. I’ll dig for more later today.

Remember our boys on the Malabar front!

Today Page 3 girl Nicola T (23, from Croydon) is “awestruck” by the bravery of Private Johnson Beharry, who has been awarded the VC. She says: “To put your life at risk the way he did, not once but twice, deserves the very highest honour.”

Yes, and his chest must swell with pride now he knows that…. (erm, I was going to put a joke about swelling chests here, but decided against it).

Search engine optimisation – a report on UK High St retailers

Here’s a shock… during January and February, I actually found some time to get some work done! For several weeks, I worked my guts out over a 10,000+ word report on 18 High St retailers (like Boots, Tesco, etc.), how they approach search engines, and how they perform in search engines.

This report has now been finalised and released.

My personal executive summary is as follows:

By and large, they appear to not know about search engines and how they work or they simply don’t care. Instead, they are heavily reliant on their brands (e.g. a quarter of a million UK web users search for ‘dixons’ every month, so why bother chasing ‘electrical goods’?).

More key findings and details are posted here at the Screen Pages weblog.

You can order a copy of this report here (there’s also a preview version of this report for those of you in the cheap seats).

Cheers all.
