Imagine a red light blinking
7th Jan 2008
Uzbekistan’s non-election (via) almost tempted me out into the open… almost.
I’m enjoying my little recharge, and – after a day of catching up on email – I’m going straight back into my cave for a post-hibernation lie-in.
Cheers all.
PS – The thought police are on the loose. Watch your step.
Unity’s new home
22nd Nov 2007
Just a quick heads-up for those who don’t already know:
Until further notice, Unity’s blog will be located at http://www.ministryoftruth.me.uk/
How embarrassment
12th Nov 2007
Late on Thursday night (happily, before I had printed out everything required for my Friday meeting) my computer was struck down by swollen capacitors.
The best option for repair was an under-warranty visit from a technician on Monday (today) and….
[drumroll]
… the operation was a complete success!
Everything is fine and dandy, I have access to all of my data (and email) again, and I am no longer forced to make do with the rickety loaner that struggled to keep up with the demands of tabbed browsing alone.
Next: Educational fun and games with Dizzy.
UPDATE (1:45pm) – Zip zip zippety-zip! Oh, I almost forgot how wonderful life could be! I missed you, baby!
[hugs computer]
I’m ‘away’ for a few days
9th Nov 2007
Until further notice, I’m on a foreign and quite rickety computer.
I will be using what limited time and capacity I have to address and moderate comments here at Bloggerheads.
If you wish to reach me via email, bloggerheads DOT com AT googlemail DOT com is your best bet until Tuesday at the earliest.
Cheers all.
Oh, and well said Garry and Justin.

Added under ‘associates’:
Mr Eugenides – Don’t always agree with him, but enjoy the read regardless.
Devil’s Kitchen – Don’t always f**king agree with him, but enjoy the c**ting read regardless.
Matt Wardman – Actually thinks about ‘little’ things like crowds and Google.
Hopi Sen – Anyone who can earn one of these from Iain Dale is well worth my time and yours.
Leon Green – Sensible, brain-engaging chap with a sense of humour.
Ben Goldacre – Out there inviting scrutiny on his own site instead of leaving it to the newspaper to (maybe) do it for him.
Richard Bartholomew – Good, clear-headed forensics.
Removed from ‘associates’:
British Bullshit Foundation – Has closed.
Not Saussure – Has been inactive for far too long.
Updated under ‘associates’:

Has never been on my blogroll:
Iain Dale – Initially, because he thought that blogroll links were designed to be handed out like candy and then became a pest about it. Later, because… well, I don’t want to spoil the party, so I’ll just leave it at that, shall I?
[Note - I'll be a busy bunny tomorrow and a persistent publishing glitch has returned to haunt the comments function. If you do leave a comment, even if you're a regular/trusted commenter, it may not appear until late tomorrow afternoon. Cheers all.]
Greetings, comrades
1st Oct 2007
Bloggerheads is back online, but I suspect that most of the action will take place here for a few more days at least.
If you miss the old ‘obsessions’, here’s some local news of (online) poll-rigging and the immediate reaction from Guildford Borough Council.
Also, the fight for freedom in Burma has led to a minor mutiny (swiftly put down) a little closer to home. (And before you start yelling at me, yes, I’m well aware that our present government does draw the line at shooting protestors in the street.)
[Psst! Another Uzbek parallel emerges here.]
UPDATE – Justin has another related affront to democracy here. Heaven forbid that any protest march should come within a mile of Parliament while it’s in session.
Foot and mouth confirmed in Surrey… again
13th Sep 2007
BBC – New foot-and-mouth case confirmed: A new case of foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in Surrey, the government has said. Chief vet Dr Debby Reynolds confirmed the outbreak near Milton Park Farm, near Egham. A 10km control zone has been set up around the site…. The latest outbreak in Surrey comes just days after the government declared the county to be free of foot-and-mouth. The farm is about 10 miles from an animal research site in Pirbright, which was the centre of an outbreak in August. The surveillance zone around the original outbreak was lifted only at midday on Saturday.
Bullocks.
Surrey foot and mouth outbreak
3rd Aug 2007
Animals on a farm in Elstead (for everyone else in the country, that’s ‘near Guildford’) have tested positive for foot and mouth disease.
Elstead is about 6 miles from here… and please stop looking at me like that.
UPDATE (11:42pm) – Well, there’s a bloody tragedy… Iain Dale missed out on a Newsnight appearance as a result. Diddums.
[I'd say something about old cows here, but there are rules.]
UPDATE (4 Aug) – Morning. We’re not the happiest village going, but things are civilised and safely squared away so far. Oh, and despite what the earlier Surrey Ad article might have suggested, the outbreak was not in Elstead, but in Normandy… which is about 6 miles from here.
UPDATE – The Cranleigh Show is still going ahead… minus the livestock (but including horses).
UPDATE (5 Aug) – Finally, some much-needed assistance… for those who are struggling to make this Gordon Brown’s fault:
Independent – Countryside in crisis: Outbreak linked to leak from foot and mouth laboratory: The outbreak of foot and mouth disease that was yesterday devastating the British livestock industry for a second time in a decade seems to have been a spectacular “own goal” by the animal health industry. Last night, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said that the strain of foot and mouth disease found on a farm in southern England was identical to one used at a nearby laboratory. This raised the prospect of the outbreak being caused by a leak from one of the facilities most concerned with trying to defeat the disease. The only two laboratories licensed in this country to work with live foot and mouth disease virus are at Pirbright, Surrey, within three miles of the infected farm.
UPDATE (6 Aug) – Of course, only a hardened cynic would mention lessons learned during the recent flooding…
BBC – Livestock missing as show goes on: With no cattle, sheep or pigs making themselves heard around the showground, the secretary of the 2007 Cranleigh Show, in Surrey, said it had been a “very quiet” affair this year… Conservative leader David Cameron was attending the event alongside Tory MP Anne Milton, whose Guildford constituency covers Cranleigh.
I’m, like, *so* mainstream darling…
8th Jul 2007
Tonight from 7pm to 8pm I’ll be appearing on the panel (in a primarily audible sense) for Fighting Talk: AOB on Radio Five Live.
Wish me luck… I’ll be operating without nicotine.
UPDATE (10PM) – Gah! Wimbledon was running over, so we recorded ‘as live’ in two parts ready to broadcast in a quicksnippy version from 8pm… then Wimbledon ran past 8pm. The current plan involves a later broadcast but topical material ages pretty damn fast, so I guess we’ll see hear what happens.
PS – Johnny Vaughan is a quality host. Not being totally live took the edge off, but I would have felt at ease regardless. It was fun.
