Fraudulent fuel for the fire

IndependentFinally, we see some common sense making it to print here in the UK (see scan to your right or click here for the article (requires payment/subscription)).

Here’s what most of the mainstream media folk have been missing/ignoring…

Gateway Pundit – Islamic Society of Denmark Used Fake Cartoons to Create Story!: The organisation Islamic Society in Denmark toured the Middle-East to create awareness about the cartoons, bringing 3 additional images, which HAD NEVER been published in any media source. Evidently, the originals were not offensive enough for the trip so they had to add these three: The first of the three additional pictures, which are of poor quality, shows Muhammad as a pedophile demon. The second shows Muhammed with a pig snout. The third depicts a praying Muslim being raped by a dog. BBC World also aired a story showing one of the three non-published images, on 2006-01-30, and wrongly claimed it had been published in Jyllands-Posten. On the tour, the group claimed to represent 21 different Muslim organisations in Denmark, although many of these groups have disclaimed any connection.

(Latter link includes links to these images.)

And now we have this (hat-tip to Media Watch Watch)…

NeanderNews – Danish Imams Busted!: Do these two photos look similiar? They should because they are the same! No, not a satire of Mohammed nor any other sacred Islamic figure but a photo of Jacques Barrot, a pig squealing contestant at the French Pig-Squealing Championships in Trie-sur-Baise’s annual festival. NeanderNews discovered this photo, taken by Bob Edme of AP, posted on an August 15, 2005 AP story seen here on MSNBC’s website. As Gateway Pundit, Counter Terrorism Blog and others have reported Danish Imam Ahmad Abu Ladan, leader of The Islamic Society of Denmark, toured the middle east to create awareness of supposed anti-Islamic cartoons and included the above black and white photo as well as two other undocumented examples. Akhmad Akkari, spokesman of the tour, explained that the three drawings had been added to “give an insight in how hateful the atmosphere in Denmark is towards Muslims.” Akkari claimed he does not know the origin of the three pictures. He said they had been sent anonymously to Danish Muslims. However, when Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet asked if it could talk to these Muslims, Akkari refused to reveal their identity. BBC World aired a story on 1-30-2006 showing the three non-published images and claimed they had been published in Denmarks Jyllands-Posten, these images however had never been published in Jyllands-Posten.

The Brussels Journal – The Cartoon Hoax: Indeed, the three cartoons breaching the paper’s ethical limits have been made by fanatical Muslim clerics themselves in order to set the world ablaze and provoke a religious war with the West. Even under Western law the Danish radical imams belong in jail. Their hate crime must be punished. The imams are the hate preachers who are responsible for the destruction and the fatalities that resulted from their lies and their blasphemy.

OK, take a breath. Relax. Here’s Akhmad Akkari’s version of events (sent in by Psychic Paul as I was writing this post)…

globeandmail.com – “It is not what I want to happen”: Flipping through the book yesterday, he explained that these images had been items of hate mail sent to his colleagues by right-wing extremists who disapproved of their activism. These images, he insistently demonstrated, were separated from the newspaper cartoons by several pages of letters. “How could anyone mistake these for the newspaper images?” he asked. “It cannot be that anyone would make this mistake.”

The final word (for now) I leave to sorrynorwaydenmark.com: The problem with media representation of such issues tends to be that the media only picks up the loudest voices, ignoring the rational ones that do not generate as much noise. Voices that seek tolerance, dialogue and understanding are always drowned out by the more sensationalist loud calls, giving viewers the impression that these views are representative of all the Arab public’s view. This website is a modest attempt at redressing this wrong. We would appreciate it if you could forward the word to as many of your friends as possible.

UPDATE – Wikipedia now has a page featuring scans of the Akkari dossier.

UPDATE – (Puts head in hands. Weeps.)

Boogie-man Nights

Hamza: The Money ShotThe Scum – Hook and a hooker: Hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza cheated on his first wife with a HOOKER, The Sun can reveal. And it was the fall-out from his fling that transformed terrorist “recruiting sergeant” Hamza – jailed for seven years yesterday – into a religious fanatic… A former pal told how Abu Hamza had a fling with a hooker behind his first wife’s back – and said: “He certainly had an eye for the women.”

So it’s not enough that he’s been jailed for seven years for inciting murder and race hate… now he has to be a sex-beast, too?

Even better, now that Hamza has – quite rightly – been jailed for hateful preaching, the Scum are going all-out to show that this proves that everything they ever said about him and/or terror plots in the UK is true. From the plan to bomb Big Ben to the ricin plot to Hamza’s disgraceful use of taxpayer’s money to fund his menacing collection of hooks.

The Scum – Bin Laden’s British HQ: HATE-filled Abu Hamza turned the mosque where he held court into Osama Bin Laden’s British HQ, The Sun can reveal. The preacher – caged for seven years yesterday – was at the centre of a web of evil that stretched around the world. Killers linked to his stomping ground – the Finsbury Park Mosque in North London – have claimed more than 3,100 lives.

Make no mistake; religious extremists attending a meeting held by an extremist preacher proves once and for all that the well-organised and all-encompassing al- Qaeda network is real… REAL, I tell you!

The Scum – Justice… what took so long?: SEVEN YEARS for running a viper’s nest of terror linked to every major atrocity from 9/11 to our 7/7. SEVEN YEARS for defiling a holy mosque and turning it into a murderous al-Qaeda training camp. SEVEN YEARS for recruiting impressionable young Muslims, some of whom went on to kill or attempt murder. Evil Abu Hamza connived at mass slaughter. His sentence should be TWICE as long. Yet he will be eligible for parole in just over three years – with more than a year lopped off for his time on remand. This rabid peddler of hate could be free to vote at the next election. The most shocking fact is that Hamza would never be inside at all – but for Sun readers. For three long years, this newspaper has campaigned relentlessly for justice. There was plenty of horrific evidence. In 2003, police raided Finsbury Park mosque, a byword for peddling anti-Western bile. They found a terror manual, blank-firing pistols, CS spray, a stun gun, knives, gas masks, nuclear protective suits and forged passports and driving licences. Police also recorded tapes of his despicable sermons, preaching terrorism, homicidal violence and hatred. The damage, said the judge, was “simply incalculable”. “You used your authority to encourage your audiences to believe it gave rise to a duty to murder,” he said. Yet while Hamza was acting as a recruiting sergeant for Osama bin Laden, police treated him like a harmless pantomime clown. It took TWO more years and the fear of a Twin Towers-style outrage in London to tip police into action. Misguided policy – denounced by our incredulous allies – allowed suspects to stay free so they could be kept under supervision. This licence to roam was exploited by Hamza whose terrorist “sleepers” spread like spores on the wind. Experts fear the cast of potential suicide bombers in Britain has mushroomed. Hamza’s manic lawyer predictably rounded on the jury for turning Hamza into a “martyr” of Islam. To their credit, the Muslim Council of Britain wanted no truck with this rubbish. “Abu Hamza was allowed to bask in the limelight and seemed to relish using inflammatory language,” they said. “We respect the verdicts today.” Hamza now risks extradition to America on more serious charges. No one must stand in the way.

No-one, do you hear me? NO-ONE! For heaven’s sake, if we don’t allow the Americans to have their way with Hamza, the man could VOTE, people! VOTE!

(pauses)
(breathes)

Sadly, there is no Page 3 editorial to back this up. (Rebekah, I am very disappointed in you; you used to be far more shameless.)

There is no denying that Abu Hamza used religion to stir up hatred and fear… all I want to point out is how the Sun has been using Hamza to do exactly the same thing. The only difference is that their bombs are government-funded and laser-guided… and aimed at the wrong country.

If there were any justice, Rebekah Wade would have been jailed for incitement years ago.

Martyrs, martyrs everywhere

BBC – Abu Hamza jailed for seven years: Controversial Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has been jailed for seven years after being found guilty of inciting murder and race hate. Abu Hamza, 47, who preached at Finsbury Park Mosque, London, was convicted of 11 of the 15 charges he faced. He has already been in jail since May 2004, and will appeal. His lawyer said he considered himself “a prisoner of faith” subject to “slow martyrdom”.

BBC – Protester is returned to prison: A demonstrator who imitated a suicide bomber in a Muslim protest over cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad has been recalled to prison. Omar Khayam, 22, of Bedford, is a convicted drug dealer who was jailed in 2002 and released on licence last year after serving half his sentence. He was arrested and recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

I have no doubt that Rebekah will be sniffing away busily tonight, making late editions of the Scum extra-special (as other shameless extremists do what they can to make capital themselves).

I haven’t felt this apprehensive since it became clear that Blair got away with his ’45 minute’ bluff…

UPDATE (23:19): Ahahahahahaha! I’ve just watched Newsnight, and have seen the glorious – *glorious* – angle the Scum have produced for tomorrow’s edition. (Please remember The Whisper Campaign as you browse the morning selection.)

Absurdity eases the pain…

UPDATE – Good question.

Independent – Blair in climbdown over education plan to buy off rebel MPs
Times – Backbench rebels force climbdown on school reform
Mirror – PM’s bid to avoid vote defeat

Tch. Where’s that famous Blair arrogance when we need it? Go on, Tony… push it! You know you want to…

BBC – Cameron ‘to curb PMs’ war power’: Conservative leader David Cameron has called for curbs on prime ministers’ power to declare war or agree treaties without the approval of MPs.

Yes, quite so. An excellent safety valve. Any PM wanting to misuse the military would first have to massage intelligence and wield an enormous amount of media control in order to diddle Parliament and… erm… hang on…

Charles Clarke: There are forces in this country, including within the Muslim community, who seek to weaken and damage the democratic fabric of our society.

Funny you should mention that…

Independent – Ministers use cartoons anger to renew calls for ‘glorification of terrorism’ law: Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, gave a strong signal to the police to proceed with the prosecution of Muslim protesters who called for people to be beheaded or massacred over the publication of offensive cartoons of the Prophet Mohamed… Mr Clarke sought to use the protests to challenge opponents of the Government’s Terror Bill to drop their opposition to some of the most controversial proposals including a clause to outlaw the “glorification” of terrorism, which was thrown out in the Lords. His remarks are certain to intensify the row over the Bill when it returns to the Commons next week.

So why do we need the new laws when you’re perfectly able to apply existing laws to this incident? Surely you’re not using a sensitive issue to gain political capital? I would have expected better from the man who waited 4 months after the July 7 bombings to starting making ‘ID cards protect you from terrorism’ noises again.

(PS – Well done to Talk Politics for being right on the money.)

Jeff Jacoby – We are all Danes now: Hindus may consider it odious to use cows as food, but they do not resort to boycotts, threats, and violence when non-Hindus eat hamburger or steak. They do not demand that everyone abide by the strictures of Hinduism and avoid words and deeds that Hindus might find upsetting. The same is true of Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Mormons: They don’t lash out in violence when their religious sensibilities are offended. They certainly don’t expect their beliefs to be immune from criticism, mockery, or dissent… But radical Muslims do.

Beg pardon?

Christian, Hindu, Sikh… I could go on, but I refuse to waste time on a man who is a waste of space.

Right, that’s it for me this morning. Back to work…

Fathers 4 Omelette srike again

Yes, I could throw some fuel onto the cartoon bonfire, but I really don’t want to… so have some Ruth Kelly Vs. Egg action instead.

Telegraph – Ruth Kelly hit by egg outside court

UPDATE – Beau Bo d’Or on yet another topic

UPDATE – OK, OK… one for the cartoon crowd, but only because it contains Larson.

UPDATE – Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Sun editorial (07 Feb): Ruth Kelly is no great shakes as an education supremo. But that does not excuse the fanatic who pelted her with eggs. Why should any public figure be subject to such humiliation? The actions of Fathers 4 Justice – including threatening to kidnap Tony Blair’s lad, Leo – verge on terrorism.

For those who came in late:
Bloggerheads – Evil plots
Bloggerheads – Leo Blair – hijacked, not kidnapped

Caught in a pincer movement

This is an interesting post that attempts to interpret the cartoons from a Danish perspective. Be warned that it stretches in places… particularly with the ‘that bomb in the turban is an orange’ theory.

This post at DailyKos does a lot to explain the timing of the suddenly widespread outrage.

Both of these links come via this post at just another Cranky Little Blog, which brings to light a point that I’ll get onto to in a mo…

Observer – A few bad cartoons are no reason to fall out: Both sides are spoiling for a fight on this one and there is a fair amount of unattractive posturing. When push comes to shove, I have to say that I would take a lot more notice of the outrage in the Middle East if I had not come across dozens of anti-semitic cartoons published in the Arab press. The striking part of Arabic Jew-baiting is that it is as prevalent, nasty and dehumanising as it ever was in Nazi Germany. Newspapers published in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Oman and UAE all use demonic images of stereotypical Jews (big nose, black coat and hat and laden with money bags) pulling the strings behind the scenes in US politics, buying political influence and spreading death, terror and disease. Josef Goebbels would have felt quite at home reading these newspapers. They are unacceptable and would, if published here, cause an outrage equal to last week’s, but this does not seem to have occurred to the Muslim spokesman or clerics that I have heard on the subject. I am not sure if there is an equivalence between racism and blasphemy, other than in effect, but I do know that we both have to move towards each other on these issues.

Now, back to that point, initially raised by The Religious Policeman (permalink is borked, sorry, but there’s an earlier and equally interesting read here if you need a landmark to start from):

The official reaction of British officialdom – precisely nothing! – illustrates how successful we have been over the years in getting them to accept the “Principle of Asymmetry”. In other words, we use their sense of “fair play”, “multiculturalism”, “democratic values”, and of course their guilt feelings, against them, so that they restrict their own freedom of action, but are very lax when dealing with the Muslim, for fear of offense or violent reaction. This of course confuses and demoralizes the ordinary person-in-the-street, and weakens their resistance to the onward march of the Ummah.

Well, I wouldn’t say precisely nothing. I’m sure that action will be taken now The Scum are engaging in some pre-trial by media with some ‘name them and shame them’ fun: Above are the faces of hate that shame the religion of Islam. Contorted with anger and preaching violent revenge, they have insulted millions of decent people in Britain with their vile actions. All the fanatics have achieved is to show their hatred of democracy and free speech. Today The Sun calls on its readers to name and shame them.

Heh. This brings to mind this Sun editorial from Thursday 2nd Feb that I neglected to blog at the time: The Sun is not printing in full the cartoons that have caused uproar in Europe and the Middle East. We have two reasons. First, the cartoons are intended to insult Muslims, and The Sun can see no justification for causing deliberate offence to our much-valued Muslim readers. Second, the row over the cartoons is largely a manufactured one. They were printed first in a Danish dispute over free speech. The Sun believes passionately in free speech, but that does not mean we need to jump on someone else’s bandwagon to prove we will not be intimidated. It does seem ridiculous, though, that mayhem is breaking out over a handful of cartoons. Can we all get real.

Yes, let’s do get real. Let’s begin with the phrase “The Sun can see no justification for causing deliberate offence to our much-valued Muslim readers”…

Perhaps this sensitivity to their many, many Muslim readers is the reason why there has been no Page 3 editorial on this subject yet…

;o)

There’s a more comprehensive report on the actions of our moral guardians here.

Let’s move on now, as there’s a fight underway, and the clear priority for any responsible political body is to gain ground…

Talk Politics – Follow the white rabbit: And of course, dear old Jack Straw is pushed out front and centre to make just the right kind of placatory noises to suit the occasion, while, behind the scenes, the spin doctors are already working overtime to figure out just how much political capital they can make out of TV news footage of brown-faced people with placards demanding that those who mock Islam should be ‘butchered’ and chanting about ‘Bin Laden coming’ for the government’s next run at forcing through some more crappy, illiberal, authoritarian anti-terrorist legislation – let’s face it, you can bet your arse that all this is going to come up when the government have to try to get last year’s anti-terrorist legislation, with its appalling ‘control orders’ renewed.

Well said. Now, onto other ground-gainers…

The Sun – ‘Bomb’ nut: I’d do it again: (Omar) Khayam, a building student from Bedford, told the Sun last night: “I’ve done nothing wrong.” Amazingly, he added: “I wasn’t trying to appear like a terrorist at all. Yes I was on the protest but I didn’t even carry any placards or shout any slogans. I can’t believe all the attention that I’ve received as I didn’t consider it such a big thing. I admit that it may have appeared in a bit of a military style and a bit provocative but that’s not illegal in this country.”

Guardian – Arrest extremist marchers, police told: Protesters in London who carried placards threatening suicide bombings and massacres in revenge for the Danish cartoons satirising the prophet Muhammad are to be investigated by Scotland Yard and could face arrest. Metropolitan police are considering the options after the demonstrations at the end of last week. A flurry of cross-party calls by MPs came at the weekend to pursue those responsible on the grounds that the threats were an incitement to murder. The slogans, written in the same style and in similar black felt-tip pen ink, urged Muslims to use violence. A protester was also photographed wearing a garment resembling a suicide bomber’s jacket. The man, Omar Khayam from Bedford, said he had no regrets about his style of dress, telling the Daily Express: “I didn’t go there to cause anyone any harm. I went along just to attend a protest. Yet I have been branded a suicide bomber overnight. Did I say, ‘Kill Jews?’ No. Did I have racist signs on me? No. So why this reaction?” He went on: “Yes, I would do it again to make a point. I could have gone along and held up banners or something, but this made the point better.”

1. Dear Omar… I beg to differ. This is precisely the kind of thing that’s bound to be misinterpreted and used as collateral by both of the parties that have hijacked your religion for political purposes.. even if you left the house that day aiming to look ‘merely military’. I’m not arguing with your point (which remains unclear) or your right to make it, but I think your judgement is lacking.

2. If an arrest is to be made over the offending placards, the police should start with the one person who created them.

CuriousHamster – Pens and Swords: Be aware, however, that the extremists who took part in those protests knew exactly what they were doing. They most definitely do want to create a clash of civilisations. The central pillar of the strategy is an attempt to deliberately provoke Western society in order to generate a response which can then be represented as a hatred of all Muslims. This response, they hope, will alienate moderate Muslims and leave them with no choice but to support the extremists and their clash of cultures. This is the same strategy used by bin Laden and his supporter. It is the central motive behind the attacks on New York. The aim was to generate Western hatred and suspicion of all Muslims which the extremists can then use to their advantage. Those who proclaim that the extremists at the protest on Friday represent the views of most Muslims will be playing into their hands. It’s not true but if you say it often enough, it might be one day. Those Muslims who are reacting in an extreme fashion are behaving outrageously. It’s almost enough to make me bring out the gimp and make some offensive images myself. But that, as I said, would be just what the extremists want us to do. I for one, have no intention of playing ball.

I demand the immediate arrest of Bob Marshall Andrews

Independent – Rebel ringleader faces Labour plot to oust him from seat: Senior ministers are seeking to punish a leading rebel backbencher following two embarrassing defeats in the Commons this week over the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill… some ministers have privately discussed taking tougher action against one of the veteran rebel ringleaders, Bob Marshall Andrews, a QC and a leading campaigner against the war in Iraq. He was privately accused of colluding with Tory opponents of the religious hatred legislation. Some ministers want him to be deselected from his Medway constituency.

You fools! You blind fools!

You want to take tough action and you’re pussy-footing around with deslection?

Bob Marshall Andrews is obviously an organiser of this Westminster protest, so he can quite legally be arrested under Section 132 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. A term of imprisonment not exceeding 51 weeks should keep him out of trouble for a while.

I realise that the police have been rather (ahem) selective in their enforcement of this new law but:

1. They have yet to be be given formal guidance on how to use it.

2. Lord Falconer has since made clear that this new law is fair because it applies to ‘everyone’.

3. Andrews more than meets the primary requirement for arrest anyway; he caused Tony Blair embarrassment.

Come on New Labour; you shaped and made this law… now do something with it.

When will Bob Marshall Andrews be arrested?

Nothing new here (i.e. we always knew that Blair was a lying scoundrel)

BBC – Iraq pact ‘was made before war’: Tony Blair and George W Bush had already decided to invade Iraq in January 2003, a new book by a human rights lawyer has claimed. The book – an updated edition of Lawless World by Philippe Sands – says the two leaders discussed going to war regardless of any United Nations view. The book quotes a note the author said was made after a meeting of the two. Downing Street said on Thursday it did not comment on discussions that “may or may not have happened” between leaders.

Guardian – Blair-Bush deal before Iraq war revealed in secret memo: Tony Blair told President George Bush that he was “solidly” behind US plans to invade Iraq before he sought advice about the invasion’s legality and despite the absence of a second UN resolution, according to a new account of the build-up to the war published today. A memo of a two-hour meeting between the two leaders at the White House on January 31 2003 – nearly two months before the invasion – reveals that Mr Bush made it clear the US intended to invade whether or not there was a second UN resolution and even if UN inspectors found no evidence of a banned Iraqi weapons programme. “The diplomatic strategy had to be arranged around the military planning”, the president told Mr Blair. The prime minister is said to have raised no objection. He is quoted as saying he was “solidly with the president and ready to do whatever it took to disarm Saddam”.

Independent – Bush ‘plotted to lure Saddam into war with fake UN plane’: George Bush considered provoking a war with Saddam Hussein’s regime by flying a United States spyplane over Iraq bearing UN colours, enticing the Iraqis to take a shot at it, according to a leaked memo of a meeting between the US President and Tony Blair. The memo appears to refute claims made in memoirs published by the former UK ambassador to Washington, Sir Christopher Meyer, who has accused Mr Blair of missing an opportunity to win the US over to a strategy based on a second UN resolution. It now appears Mr Bush’s mind was already made up.

Oh come now, people… can’t you see what’s going on here? This Philippe Sands fellow is obviously trying to sell his book! (Sorry, but we refuse to be drawn on details of this or that, and wish to move the debate forward. Can we begin by bringing an end to childish and over-simplified claims that the Iraq invasion was all about money or oil? Oh, well you would bring that up, wouldn’t you? How typical. We try to stage a constructive debate and…)
