The ‘Bomb Al-Jazeera’ memo

Boris Johnson: If someone passes me the document within the next few days I will be very happy to publish it in The Spectator, and risk a jail sentence.

BlairWatch: We’re with you Boris. Here’s the deal. If you get it, send it to us and we will also publish it. We will also risk jail.

I’m in. If I get my hands on it, I’ll publish. Hell, I’ll broadcast it in a way that will make it impossible to shut down.

How about you?

UPDATE – BBC – Al-Jazeera seeks ‘US bomb’ talks: A senior al-Jazeera executive is in the UK to demand publication of a memo in which George Bush allegedly discusses bombing the TV station’s HQ. (via)

UPDATE (28 Nov) – BlairWatch – Bombing al Jazeera – Were There Two Memos?: We have had it confirmed by a source who is in a position to know, that there ARE two seperate memos and that the UK Government are ‘livid’ that the second one is being leaked.

UPDATE (29 Nov) – Robber Rabbit – As seen on Al Jazeera: More disturbing was the implication that the whole “Bomb Qatar” thing wasn’t simply Georgie Boy thinking aloud. Maguire is certain from his sources that the tone of the memo shows Bush was indeed not joking, and this wasn’t simply one man’s big idea. Indeed, Maguire implied that this policy idea must have been passed around high level circles in the White House before Blair was brought into the loop. If so, whose idea was it?

Go. Do. Now.

Write to your MP and urge/ask them to support this motion. If they won’t support it, make sure they tell you why.

[Note – My approach has to be a bit ‘special’, because Anne Milton and I have a special relationship. You’ll probably want to be a heck of a lot nicer.]

I wrote this letter:

Dear Anne,

During the election, you claimed to be angry about the Iraq war ‘from the very beginning’, so I look forward to seeing your signature on Early Day Motion 1088:
http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=29437&SESSION=875

Cheers

Tim Ireland

And then I made a post on the Anne Milton weblog.

Are you still here? Why?

Go. Do. Now. (Erm… ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’)

Eclectic link dump #16

Do excuse me… busy day today. Have some links:

Guardian – MPs seek independent inquiry into Iraq war

Press Gazette – MPs put heat on Meyer to quit

(UPDATE – Ooooh, look what else just went live there… Rupert Murdoch tells all to Press Gazette – excusive interview. And here’s a rundown in the Guardian via Nosemonkey.)

A belated plug for HearFromYourMP.com

I won’t be plugging 2005 Blogged: Dispatches from the Blogosphere until I’ve read it in full. At my leisure. So there.

Bush’s approval ratings – The New Map

BBSpot – Which Nigerian Spammer Are You?

Identity Theft Secrets – Phishers of men show Christmas spirit (relevant bit starts at 5:10, but you may want to watch the whole thing)

CNN – ‘Ugly dog’ Sam dies at 14

DailyKos – Pentagon has called White Phosphorus a “chemical weapon”

Right-wing bloggers are in an uproar over Cheney being X’ed by CNN. Reuters report is here, a good round-up of links is here (warning: contains opinion), but the very, very best part is this comment I found at DailyPundit’s ‘we called CNN and some guy in the call centre said they did it deliberately’ post: Kevin Finn said, “The Vice-President is a symbol of the United States, much like the American flag. For CNN to desecrate the image of the Vice President is the same as the Iranians burning the U.S. flag at a rally staged for the whole world via television. It is a slap in the face to all those who serve and have served in the armed forces”.

(UPDATE – FFS, even Michelle Malkin has managed to engage her brain and keep her foaming mouth under control… but this is sure to run for a while, regardless. The pack is hungry for blood.)

Rolling Stone – The Man Who Sold the War: By law, the Bush administration is expressly prohibited from disseminating government propaganda at home. [Not that that’s ever stopped them – Tim] But in an age of global communications, there is nothing to stop it from planting a phony pro-war story overseas — knowing with certainty that it will reach American citizens almost instantly. A recent congressional report suggests that the Pentagon may be relying on “covert psychological operations affecting audiences within friendly nations.” In a “secret amendment” to Pentagon policy, the report warns, “psyops funds might be used to publish stories favorable to American policies, or hire outside contractors without obvious ties to the Pentagon to organize rallies in support of administration policies.” The report also concludes that military planners are shifting away from the Cold War view that power comes from superior weapons systems. Instead, the Pentagon now believes that “combat power can be enhanced by communications networks and technologies that control access to, and directly manipulate, information. As a result, information itself is now both a tool and a target of warfare.”

National Journal – Key Bush Intelligence Briefing Kept From Hill Panel: Ten days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush was told in a highly classified briefing that the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence linking the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein to the attacks and that there was scant credible evidence that Iraq had any significant collaborative ties with Al Qaeda, according to government records and current and former officials with firsthand knowledge of the matter.

Iraqis worried about wives: A veteran Middle East observer, Robert Fisk, says Iraqi civilians are worried about how to save their wives from becoming prostitutes. ‘Vast armies of the Mafioso are now operating in Iraq,’ said Fisk. ‘Women are being sold into prostitution into Syria and Yemen.’

Oh, and I tripped over this last night when checking initial search results for ‘leo blair’ (for the record, the blog entry launching The World According to Leo Blair is today 10th in Google, the video itself is 12th):

Scotsman – Hidden message in Leo picture (25 Nov 2003): Mr Chirac had taunted Mr Blair last year about whether he could look Leo in the face if the premier was responsible for starting a war – a spat which led to the postponement of the equivalent Anglo-French summit last year. The president said Leo was “a very appealing child that I love very much” but added: “I can’t pre-judge what the Prime Minister will say to his son when he wants to tell him these things, nor what his son will answer, but these situations are not easy.”

UPDATE (3:51pm) – Two extras from the Guardian….

From the letters page: “It is scandalous that students are using the internet to plagiarise their course work. We must keep up standards. Can you imagine what would happen if our prime minister presented as intelligence a dossier plagiarised from the internet. It is too dreadful to even contemplate.” – Ron Senchak (Manchester)

Simon Tisdall – Uzbekistan looks east for new friends: It looks like Craig Murray was right all along. To the US’s annoyance, Britain’s former ambassador to Uzbekistan publicly criticised human rights abuses by President Islam Karimov’s government. Mr Murray lost his job last year. But even the most hard-nosed US strategists could not turn a blind eye to the massacre in the town of Andijan in May. The ensuing confrontation, all the more explosive for being delayed, has come at a high price to Washington’s interests in central Asia.

A bombing nation

Mirror – Bush planned to bomb Arab TV station al-Jazeera

BBC – Bush al-Jazeera ‘plot’ dismissed: The White House has dismissed claims George Bush was talked out of bombing Arab television station al-Jazeera by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. The allegations were made by an unnamed source in the Daily Mirror newspaper. A White House official said: “We are not going to dignify something so outlandish with a response.” … According to the Mirror’s source, the transcript records a conversation during Mr Blair’s visit to the White House on 16 April 2004, in the wake of an attempt to root out insurgents in the Iraqi city of Falluja, in which 30 US Marines died… A Downing Street spokesman said: “We have got nothing to say about this story. We don’t comment on leaked documents.” But Mr Kilfoyle – a former defence minister and leading Labour opponent of the Iraq war – has called for the full text to be published.

And, as they’re clearly innocent, they have nothing to fear. I’m sure they’ll publish.

(*cough*)

Mirror (23rd Nov): The Daily Mirror was yesterday told not to publish further details from a top secret memo, which revealed that President Bush wanted to bomb an Arab TV station. The gag by the Attorney General Lord Goldsmith came nearly 24 hours after the Mirror informed Downing Street of its intention to reveal how Tony Blair talked Bush out of attacking satellite station al-Jazeera’s HQ in friendly Qatar.

True or not, this is a very good example of how Blair has been compromised by actions in the lead-up to the Iraq war. All you need to do is take a look at the people we’re being asked to rely on here.

UPDATE – Guardian – Legal gag on Bush-Blair war row: The attorney general last night threatened newspapers with the Official Secrets Act if they revealed the contents of a document allegedly relating to a dispute between Tony Blair and George Bush over the conduct of military operations in Iraq. It is believed to be the first time the Blair government has threatened newspapers in this way… Richard Wallace, editor of the Daily Mirror, said last night: “We made No 10 fully aware of the intention to publish and were given ‘no comment’ officially or unofficially. Suddenly 24 hours later we are threatened under section 5 [of the secrets act]”.

Now the question is; will this memo reach Teh Interwebs? Because if it does, it’s all over bar the shouting.

Oi! Mirror peeps! Go long!

UPDATE – You know, I’ve looked at this a number of times and I still can’t spot an outright denial from the White House or Downing St. Perhaps I’m missing something…

UPDATE (24 Nov) – Some extra links for you:
Chicken Yoghurt – Bombing the messenger
Another fantastic photoshop from Beau Bo d’Or
A selection of comments received by Aljazeera.net in response to the article Memo: Bush wanted Aljazeera bombed.
Boris Johnson – I’ll go to jail to print the truth about Bush and al-Jazeera: We all hope and pray that the American President was engaging in nothing more than neo-con Tourette-style babble about blowing things up. We are quite prepared to believe that the Daily Mirror is wrong. We are ready to accept that the two British civil servants who have leaked the account are either malicious or mistaken. But if there is one thing that would seem to confirm the essential accuracy of the story, it is that the Attorney General has announced that he will prosecute anyone printing the exact facts… If someone passes me the document within the next few days I will be very happy to publish it in The Spectator, and risk a jail sentence. The public need to judge for themselves. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Fabrications

BBC – US man guilty of Bush death plot: A US citizen has been convicted of plotting to kill President George W Bush and being a member of al-Qaeda. Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, 24, faces a possible life sentence after a US jury found him guilty on nine counts, including conspiracy to hijack a plane. The Arab-American student was held in Saudi Arabia in 2003 and reportedly confessed to membership of al-Qaeda. His defence team said he was tortured and forced to confess, but the judge refused to disallow the confession.

Please keep in mind that – through a confession extracted under torture – this man has admitted to being a terrorist. And – as Donald Rumsfeld will happily tell you – terrorists are trained to lie about their treatment while in custody.

New Flash Video: The World According To Leo Blair

Leo Blair screengrabAs I mentioned here, on the day after this specific project started, I often get good ideas for creative projects while working on other creative projects (related or otherwise). If I exercise the right part of my mind, I actually sweat useful material. Interesting, no?

No?

OK, anyway, on that day I made a promise, and it was as follows:

There is a new animation on the way. Totally new. You will be struck by its newness.

And here is that animation:

Backing Blair VII – The World According to Leo Blair

It’s 4.8Mb, so patience is required… but the impression will be lasting, I can assure you.

Now, let’s get back to the boring bits…

On the day the project was born, I’d just heard back from a guy by the name of Brook Adams after asking permission to use some of his great ukulele stuff in a Flash animation. Three songs were rattling around in my head that day; Anarchy In The UK, The Star-Spangled Banner and Live & Let Die.

On that same day, as I wrestled with my Blair/Guy and answered yet more awkward questions from my curious kiddies, I hit pay-dirt when the following thought occurred:

What does Tony Blair tell little Leo when his son asks questions about what’s going on in the world?

I started to imagine what Tony would tell him and how Leo would interpret this – and how he would balance it with whatever he picked up from snippets of broadcasted news and hushed/hurried conversations behind the door of 10 Downing St.

This animation is what I imagine would be going on in Leo’s mind right now if he were aware of the gruesome details of the invasion and ‘liberation’ of Iraq and the ‘war’ on terror… if those details were primarily presented from his father’s point of view.

It’s also meant to address the primitive parts of our own minds that readily accept carefully-crafted lies/summaries (e.g. ‘but then Saddam bombed 911…’) because the details are too hard to face. This is why the details (distressing as they are) are in there. Some horrible truths need to be faced – and addressed – before our complacency breeds something much, much worse.

UPDATE – Hahahaha! Oops: Chicken Yoghurt had a visitor today from someone googling ‘tim ireland bottle uzbekistan’. You’ll know why after watching the movie.

I’d best add this (and the word ‘bottling’) to the post just in case Google falls short – and so my own search engine knows just what the hell is going on.

Attention, strangers and newcomers! If you want to know more about Uzbekistan, then Craig Murray (former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan) is your man. Start there. Oh, and there’s plenty more here.

Independent – Craig Murray: The reality of Britain’s reliance on torture: So the UK receives this intelligence material not occasionally, not fortuitously, but in connection with a regular programme of torture with which we are intimately associated. Uzbekistan is one of those security services from whose “friendly liaison” services we obtained information. And I will tell you what torture means. It means the woman who was raped with a broken bottle in both vagina and anus, and who died after ten days of agony. It means the old man suspended by wrist shackles from the ceiling while his children were beaten to a pulp before his eyes. It means the man whose fingernails were pulled before his face was beaten and he was immersed to his armpits in boiling liquid. It means the 18-year-old whose knees and elbows were smashed, his hand immersed in boiling liquid until the skin came away and the flesh started to peel from the bone, before the back of his skull was stove in. These are all real cases from the Uzbek security services which we viewed as friendly liaison, and from which we obtained regular intelligence, in the Uzbek case via the CIA. A month ago, that liaison relationship was stopped – not by us, but by the Uzbeks.

AlterNet – Rights and Liberties – Why Torture Doesn’t Work: No one has yet offered any validated evidence that torture produces reliable intelligence. While torture apologists frequently make the claim that torture saves lives, that assertion is directly contradicted by many Army, FBI, and CIA professionals who have actually interrogated al Qaeda captives.

The Sun reports and then denies own shenanigans

It’s the Sun wot bugged it!

Heads-up via Martin.

Oh, and have a look for a traitor this morning if you have a mo (the ginger-freckled one is at No. 4). The G-result was expected… this wasn’t.

(PS – New video will be with you shortly… and I do mean shortly. We’re talking mere minutes here, folks.)

Still building…

Oh man, just you wait until this latest Flash show is finished… you’ll blow a gasket.

:o)

Here, chew on some cluster bombs, some torture flights and a flawed exit strategy while you wait.

UPDATE – A series of photos relating to the latter link. Oh, and does Bush just standing there helplessly, waiting for someone to tell him what to do remind you of anything?

Back To Iraq introduces comment registration

Back to Iraq – Abusive comments khaalas: Anyway, what I’m getting at is that you will no longer be allowed to comment unless you’ve registered with TypeKey. I tried this once before and it really cut down on the people leaving comments. I didn’t like it. But I feel the barrage of threats of death and violence against me and my family is too much. No one should have to put up with that. I’ve had friends die and be kidnapped; I’ve been shot at by all sides in this conflict. I frankly don’t need juvenile ranting cluttering my site and intruding on my thoughts. You folks who do this are finished. (Which is what khaalas means: “enough, finished, ended, done.”) It should also cut down on comment spam which is still a scourge that is difficult to combat.
