Guardian/PA – Menezes image ‘dishonestly changed’: A composite image comparing Jean Charles de Menezes and Hussain Osman shown to a jury by lawyers for the Metropolitan Police was dishonestly manipulated, it has been claimed. The picture, containing half the face of innocent Brazilian Mr de Menezes and half the face of terrorist Osman was produced at the force’s Old Bailey trial. It was claimed to illustrate the difficulties officers would have had in differentiating the two. But Clare Montgomery QC, prosecuting, told the court that it had been altered “by either stretching or resizing so the face ceases to have its correct proportions”. The judge, Mr Justice Henriques, told the jury: “A serious allegation has been made that a picture has been manipulated so as to mislead.”
Telegraph – Picture of Menezes and bomber ‘manipulated’: The image was used to show how officers, who shot Mr de Menezes dead in July 2005, may have had difficulty telling the difference between the two men… Michael George, a forensics consultant, produced an alternative image, which was shown to the jury, in which the two faces have different skin tones and their mouths and noses are not aligned.
BBC – Menezes picture ‘was manipulated’: Ronald Thwaites QC, defending, asked Mr George whether there had been any manipulation “of the primary features of the face”. Mr George replied: “I don’t believe there has been any… but making the image brighter has changed the image.”
Via Charlie, a heads-up about the image currently dominating the front page of the Labour website. The original can be downloaded here if you’d like to take a closer look.
Me, I’m thinking that your average British arm has unique reflective qualities, and what we are seeing here is probably an optical illusion created by reflected light and Gordon’s natural highlights.
No, really…
UPDATE – Via B3ta… [slaps forehead]… the most obvious ‘edge’ is probably a sleeve.
PS – Tch. All the fun stuff seems to happen while I’m away. (more)
What the hell is this?
7 weeks after I was promised payment by Emap, I get an envelope with my name and address hurriedly scribbled on the front. There isn’t a cheque inside; instead, there’s a BACS form for me to fill in… with my ‘vendor ID’ hurriedly scribbled into the first field. Surely they could have sent this 7 weeks ago.
If Emap are going to strategically classify this payment as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ they’ll want to be far more convincing about it.
(puts head in hands)
Emap have just scored one hell of a two-fer… not only did they ask for permission and yet totally screw it up on one image, they also nicked another image without asking and printed a picture of a teenager’s penis in the process.
As I’ve hinted before, I think there’s a way for Zoo and similar lads-mags/rags to handle this sensibly and still make money hand over quivering fist… but I’m less inclined to tell Emap about it as each day passes. For starters, they promised me my cheque over a month ago.
Within a week, the Sun sees sense.
(Psst! By sheer coincidence an email came in about 30 seconds after my previous post that has me hoping that this won’t be the last quick result today.)
Remember the recent adventure with Emap? (The update on this has been delayed, BTW…hang in there.)
Here’s an article about the recent Emap kerfuffle that is of added interest once you delve into comments (some readers would appear to think that Mr Nash’s response fails the scrutiny test).
(Psst! I’m not waiting until my cheque arrives before I comment… I’m timing how long it takes to arrive before I comment.)
After I blogged that I’d been passed straight over to Emap’s lawyers, I called those lawyers (Wiggin) and was informed that I was, in fact, to expect an email from the picture editor for Zoo Weekly (i.e. the individual I had initially contacted).
That email just arrived.
Emap have:
– Apologised for using my image without permission
– Assured me that, in future, they will only include material where they have consent in advance
– Offered to pay the invoice
I may be expanding on this early next week, but for now, that’s the situation in a nutshell.
